An Gorta Mor - The Great Hunger - (1845-1850)
In Memory of the Four Million People Ireland lost to starvation and diaspora. Your sufferings are not forgotton.
The Celtic Cross, the symbol of Redemption through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, is set within a circle representing all of Creation. The four points of the Cross not only refer to the wounds of Christ, but indicate the four seasonal positions of the sun. In the center of the Celtic Cross there is generally a triangle representing the great mystery of the Trinity, as proclaimed by St. Patrick himself.
This Celtic Cross was erected by the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 1. Citrus County Florida in January 2000. It was erected to honor the memory of the millions of people who starved to death or were forced to leave Ireland during AN GORTA MOR.
