Confirmation

Confirmation

Confirmation is the completion of the Sacrament of Baptism. “The effect of the Sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of ht Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost. From this fact, Confirmation brings and increase and deepening of baptismal grace:

  • it roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which make us cry, “Abba! Father!”
  • it unites us more firmly to Christ;
  • it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;
  • it renders our bond with the Church more perfect;
  • it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross” – Catechism of the Catholic Church #1302 & #1303

“Every baptized person not yet confirmed can and should receive the sacrament of Confirmation. Since Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist form a unity, the Sacrament of Initiation, it follows that “the faithful are obliged to receive this sacrament at the appropriate time, for without Confirmation and Eucharist, Baptism is certainly valid and efficacious, but Christian initiation remains incomplete.” – Catechism of the Catholic Church #1306

At St. Scholastica, we traditionally confirm young people in the 8th grade or older. They must have at least two years of faith formation immediately preceding the reception of the sacrament. We do recommend that once a child begins faith formation usually in Kindergarten or first grade that they continue in formation for the remainder their school years and beyond even as an adult. We must remember that we will never know all there is to be known about God and our Catholic Christian faith.

If you are interested in your child receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation, please contact
Kathy Brasseur in the parish office. If you are an adult wishing to be confirmed, please contact Fr. Bill Santhouse in the parish office at 352-746-9422.
